2015 Guimaro Extravaganza"Ribeira Sacra, in Spain's northwest corner, is known for it's very steep terraced vineyards. They are beautiful and dramatic but difficult to work. Like the Mosel in Germany or Cote Rotie in France, the effort is worth the return. Pedro and his parents established their winery in the early 1990's and continue to work together, in the vineyard and in the cellar. Pedro actually hails from a long line of farmers and winegrowers in the Amandi area (a subregion of Ribeira with prime slate soils and south facing exposure). For Guimaro, and in Ribeira Sacra, it's all about Mencia - the region's star grape variety. Pedro's older vines are anywhere from 70-95 years old. They also work with the Godello grape for their white wines and Pedro has recently begun a huge project cultivating several indigenous varieties (Caiño, Merenzao, Souson, Albariño and Treixadura). Pedro himself will be here pouring some highlights from Guimaro's current releases. Stop on by, pick his brain, and taste these fantastic wines from such a stellar region!" - domaineLA "This tasting offers a great opportunity to taste wines from one of Spain's most impressive winegrowing regions, Galicia, and to meet one of its most gifted winemakers that is at this moment becoming a global superstar. Located in the beautiful Ribeira Sacra region, Pedro Guimaro has been quietly making wine in his family's cellar since the late 1990's. In the last few years the international wine community has taken notice. Jancis Robinson, The Wine Advocate, and many of San Francisco's top sommeliers regard Guimaro as one of the most consistently outstanding producers in northwest Spain. Guimaro's wines possess the depth of a fine Cornas and the savory finesse of a red Chinon––but with a soul that is uniquely Spanish. Pedro Guimaro will be joined by Jose Pastor, one of the most respected US importers of Spanish wine. He focuses exclusively on small, family owned properties who work with native grape varieties and bottle wines in an arch-traditionalist style. Jose will be pouring Luis Rodriguez Ribeiro selections." - TSFTC "Spain produces some of the best wines in the world, but for the most part they fly under the radar of the wine world's collective conscious. While Spanish wines are underappreciated as a whole, perhaps the region with the most potential is Ribeira Sacra. This northwestern region is famous for its indigenous grape, Mencía, which makes wines that can be vaguely reminiscent of Pinot Noir. The high altitude vineyards are planted on steep slopes of slate, which is felt in the wine's minerality and precision. We will be joined by winemaker Pedro Rodríguez and Guímaro's importer, José Pastor." - 1760 "Jose Pastor has a killer portfolio which includes a number of super savory wines from Galicia specifically. This Monday he will be introducing us to the winemaker from Guimaro who produces some fantastic examples of Mencia from Ribeira Sacra. These are wines you probably have never heard about and that's something you need to change..." - HSA Houston, TX Monday March 16 5:30 to 7:30 pm (Open to the Public) Meet Pedro Rodriguez of Guimaro Brooklyn, NY Friday March 20 8 pm (Reservation Required) "Pedro Rodríguez of Guímaro is coming to town and we are thrilled to invite you to an evening of excellent food, wine, and conversation at Lot 2 on Friday, March 20...
